Oskar 6 week check-up!ย

Oskar had his 6 week check up yesterday! It didn’t take very long, she checked his eyes, ears, spine, reflexes, hips etc. He was pretty good and didn’t complain much.. he just wasn’t very keen when she checked his hips. It looked pretty uncomfortable!

She said she was happy with his progress and he seems to be growing well! ๐Ÿ˜ she didn’t weigh him as I need to take him within the next 2 weeks!

I had to book his 8 week immunisations yesterday too.. I am not looking forward to that in the slightest ๐Ÿ™ hopefully it all goes well.. on the other hand we have our first swim class on Saturday!!

Here is my 6 week old baby boy!!

Established a bedtime routine!

Establishing a bedtime routine was something that I was pretty nervous about doing with Oskar because he is a pretty light sleeper, we share a bedroom and usually he will fall asleep on you and then wake up as soon as you put him down!

Then I had the questions in my mind like “whats too late?” “whats too early?” etc. for times to put him to bed. Oskar sleeps pretty well and basically sleeps through the night.. So I decided to run him a bath and bath him at about 8:30pm get his pjs on etc. Then turn off the lights and give him his bottle, he usually falls asleep having his bottle and then I put him in his moses basket! By this time it is usually about 9:30 – 10:00pm but the time he actually gets to bed differs, depends onย if he wakes up when I lay him down or not!

He will then usually sleep until approx. 6:30am! We have been doing this for about 5 nights now and I feel that its going really well! He is taking to it much better than I thought ๐Ÿ™‚ (Hopefully it sticks!)

What routine do you have for your little ones?:)

Here is a picture of my smiley nearly 6 week old! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Sorted the ‘Colic’? & Tummy Time?

Hellooo..

So yesterday morning I decided enough was enough for Oskar, after crying for hours on end me giving him infacol, not seeming to work I gave him gripe water once he turned 4 weeks old which constipated him. Poor child! I decided to get him in at the doctors. (a week before our 6 week check up, typical!) they managed to fit us in at 3pm and I took him down because by this point along with the crying he was being sick after literally every feed, if not then he was bringing up clear liquid along with green runny poo (tmi) but then that turned into constipation! (I think that was from the gripe water.)

By this point I was beginning to think he was intolerant to the baby formula as I was as a baby.. the doctor did all their usual tests and in the end thought he may have reflux. She gave me some baby gaviscon to put in his feeds which seems to be working! He hasn’t been screaming constantly and nappies are back to normal ๐Ÿ™‚ fingers crossed it stays that way!

I also just wanted to ask other mammas out there what age they started doing tummy time with their babies ๐Ÿ™‚ I decided to put Oskar on his tummy using his feeding pillow, he seemed quite content for about 5 minutes or so haha!

One month postpartum!

One month! I have a one month old! So one month on and I’m starting to feel better physically. My stitches played havoc with me and were sooo painful for about 3 and a half weeks, its just recently that I’ve come off of the paracetamol and I’m able to walk about and stand for much longer periods of time!

Post partum bleeding is still happening but its so much lighter, I’m not sure it will last much longer.. although I’m not sure how long it usually lasts???

I have felt happy in myself just the odd night where he’s crying because of colic and I generally felt like he didn’t want me because once I handed him to someone else he would stop, probably could sense I was getting a little stressed. But he’s starting to settle down now and I’m getting pretty used to it anyway ๐Ÿ™‚ I have had so much support from everyone which I am eternally grateful for.

I’m still taking my iron which the hospital prescribed for me, I still have to take it 3 times a day(yuck!) which I’m not going to lie I sometimes forget to take it!!

I am also able to fit back into my size 6 jeans now eeek! feels so good to wear jeans again as throughout most of my pregnancy I just stuck with leggings and jeggings as maternity jeans were just so baggy on me and I am not a fan of baggy clothes! I can’t wait to go shopping for some new clothes ๐Ÿ™‚ I am also loving that I am now able to sleep on my belly again! I missed it so much when I was pregnant!

I am currently weighing at 7 stone 2, which is still a little over my pre-birth weight but we are getting there! I’ll show you my one month postpartum belly…

I’m not sure why my belly has gone so dark since being pregnant! The line and definitelyย ย around my belly button!

Oskar’s Tongue tie appointment & One month update!

One month already!! So, Oskar had his tongue-tie appointment on his one month milestone! His appointment was at 3;30pm, I felt alright when we got to the hospital, it was when we were in the waiting room and I heard another baby that was before Oskar cry that I started to feel apprehensive.

We got into the room and he was fast asleep on me, he slept right through his heel prick test so I was kind of hoping he’d do the same, but I guess it’s hard to sleep when you’ve got someone messing around with your mouth. We did some consent forms and she went through the procedure with me and then I put him up on the bed.

It wasn’t as bad as i thought it was going to be, it literally only took a few minutes. He cried a little bit but stopped as soon as they handed him back to me. There was hardly any bleeding.. probably just as much as if your gum has bled or something. He took his feed straight away, they like them to feed before they let you go because it is meant to help the healing process.

He is healing pretty well ๐Ÿ™‚ He has a small ulcer under his tongue which is yellowy in colour, she said this would happen and is all part of the healing process. She said this will probably stay for about a week. That night, he was a little grizzly but I’m not sure whether that was because he was uncomfortable or because of his colic. We also have to be extra careful with sterilising his bottles and dummies also as he is at risk of infection.

One month milestone!

So I know he is now technically 4 weeks and 2 days, but I took him to get weighed today and I didn’t want to post his update until I knew how much he was weighing at!

Oskar is turning into a right little dude ๐Ÿ™‚ He looks so mature! he weighs 9lbs & 6.5oz and measures at 20.5 inches long ๐Ÿ™‚ He is also beginning to hate being put down! He loves his cuddles too much ๐Ÿ™‚ I made a photo to basically sum up Oskar’s first month see here….

Colic!?!

Hiii!

So again, tomorrow is the day! Oskar’s tongue tie appointment.. hopefully they don’t cancel on me again ๐Ÿ˜‰ but anyway, I just wanted to write a post about colic and see if anyone else’s baby suffers from colic and what their techniques are etc.

Colic is basicallyย muscle spasms and excess acid created when air bubbles form in a baby’s tummy. When the air bubbles get trapped in a baby’s stomach, the stomach think it is full of food, so acids are produced which would normally break down the food particles. These acids are not needed and can cause irritation. At the same time, because the stomach is full of air bubbles its muscles are unable to relax causing cramps and spasms.

Oskar suffers quite a bit with colic and I feel so bad leaving him to just ‘cry it out’ so I guess thats partially the reason I’m quick to pick him up as soon as he cries, I mean, I wouldn’t want to be just left to cry when I need someone – at 21. Let alone practically a month old (omg..1 month tomorrow!) So Oskar was waking up quite a lot in the night which is not like him at all he is usually a pretty good sleeper, waking up every 5 hours so thats basically only once in the night and around 11am – 1am was his worst time for colic he just screams and nothing I do seems to help!

We tried infacol, which if you’ve never heard of it its just like an orange flavour syrup (best way I can explain) and it has a little doppler thing which you squeeze to get the syrup into the syringe and basically squirt into his mouth. It is meant to help to relieve the gas in his stomach. But this didn’t seem to be working, we tried it for a week and a half or so, maybe a little longer but doesn’t seem to be helping him at all. So after a bad night last night (we didn’t sleep much!!) I’ve bought him some gripe water.

I basically have to give him 5ml of gripe water on a spoon or syringe during or after each feed, so we shall see how it goes! It smells so bad though, I feel sorry for him haha!

Gripe water can’t be used on babies under 1 month old, I know Oskar isn’t quite 1 month yet but 1 day isn’t going to make much difference haha! then babies from 6-12 months can have 10ml. You can buy gripe water at most chemists or drug stores!

This is the one we got:

Oskar’s tongue tie updateย

This is just going to be a very quick update!:)

Yesterday morning I was getting ready to take Oskar to his hospital appointment when they rang me and said they had to cancel his appointment. (So annoying!) they said that they had an emergency and had to cancel all appointments after that (slightly unsettling haha) so he didn’t get it done – poor bubba!!

We are re-booked in for Monday 6th Feb so hopefully he will actually get it done this time!

Health Visitor & Oskar’s Tongue Tie!

Hello!

I know I haven’t posted in a while, been super busy with my little man.. (and ill at the same time ๐Ÿ˜ฆ ) The flu is not fun with an almost 3 week old baby! Cannot believe that this time next week ill be saying that I have a 1 month old! Thats just ridiculous, its gone so quick..

Anyway, the health visitor came to see us on Monday 23rd January she weighed him and he was weighing just over his birth weight so 7lbs 14.5 ๐Ÿ™‚ She fed me so much ‘information’ it was pretty hard to take in, I think thats why they overload you with leaflets. My little man is doing much better now with his feeding, he’s now taking 4oz every 3 hours in the day time and every 5 hours at night ๐Ÿ™‚

His cord finally fell off this week, think it was Wednesday. So I gave him his first bath ๐Ÿ™‚ (ill post a photo below) he loved it, he was kicking his legs! which is a good job really seeing as we are starting swimming next month ๐Ÿ™‚

I am not looking forward to tomorrow.. I’ve got to take Oskar to his tongue tie appointment, they’re going to snip it to hopefully correct it and make it more comfortable for him ๐Ÿ™‚ Hopefully it all goes smoothly, they say its an easy procedure. They just won’t let us leave until he’s had a feed as using the tongue helps it to heal. I’ll post an update on how it goes! ๐Ÿ™‚

One week postpartum

Okay so one week after giving birth.. already! After my episiotomy I am still feeling pretty sore, but compared to the first couple of days where I was bed bound and couldn’t walk I am doing pretty well.

The only thing that is really bothering me at the moment is the pain I’m feeling down there when I’m stood up, standing is okay for a couple of minutes and then I have to sit down, it is a hard feeling to explain but I’m happy I’m not so swollen and in as much pain as I was.

I think the heaviest I got in my pregnancy was 7 stone 8, I am now currently 7 stone 4 and 3/4. Which is still quite a bit heavier than what I was before I was pregnant. My boobs are alright, the other day they were SO sore and as I’m not breastfeeding I literally couldn’t do anything with them apart from take paracetamol.

I’m not sure whether I wrote about it in much detail on here as I wasn’t feeling up to much in hospital but I lost a lot of iron and therefore had to have 2 blood transfusions. So now I’m home I have to take iron 3 times a day for 6 weeks!

Here are my one week postpartum pictures:

I’m missing my bump already! But I wouldn’t change my baby boy for the world! ๐Ÿ™‚

1 week old!

I can not believe my baby is a week old already! It feels so much better being back home in my own environment rather than in the hospital..

Heres a bit about Oskar..

Oskar is a very alert baby.. I’m told this can be common for babies that were over due. He opens his eyes and scans his environment, his hearing is all good as he had his hearing test at the hospital, he also gets startled pretty easily by the dog barking, loud voices etc. Oskarย is a very good sleeper. He hardly has me up in the night, I have to set my alarm and wake him for feeds (as recommended by my midwife). He goes straight back to sleep after being fed and changed.

He likes his lights on his spaceship wall light, I turn it on and he lays there for ages just staring at it! He likes to lay on me on his tummy whilst having cuddles. He will stay like this for ages ๐Ÿ™‚

Oskar currently has an 80% tongue tie, which made it difficult for him to feed at the beginning. I was aiming to breast feed and because of his tongue tie I was unable to as it would make it challenging for the both of us which could lead to him becoming distressed. In the hospital Oskar wasn’t feeding very much at all, I was using the SMA starter pack bottles which come ready made. He was only having about 25ml of this to begin with, at this point I wasn’t waking him every 3 hours for feeds. He was going longer periods of time without feeds so I decided I would start to wake him every 3 -4 hours for his feed. Now back at home, Oskar is feeding so much better and is taking 2oz every 3 – 4 hours.

We have an appointment at the end of the month to see someone about his tongue tie and hopefully get it clipped ๐Ÿ™‚ It is a very easy procedure and apparently isn’t that distressing for newborns, hopefully it will make it more comfortable for him while feeding and won’t affect his speech when he’s older ๐Ÿ™‚

Oskar enjoys being spoken or sung to, he will just lay there with wide eyes looking at you. He makes little noises which are just the cutest, I love laying and listening to him ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve only washed his hair once as doing it at the hospital would have been a nightmare. He loved it though, didn’t kick up a fuss, just laid there looking content ๐Ÿ™‚

Oskar isn’t a fan of being changed, both his clothes and his nappy. Although he is getting much better now. Whilst dressing him if he doesn’t want you to dress him he locks his legs and arms so you can’t get them in haha.

My dog has taken soo well to him! The night we came home he was so excited to see me – I missed him! He walked over to the car seat and had a sniff etc. I thought he was going to be majorly jealous or react badly, but he seems to be really chilled and it hasn’t really affected him. The only time he has really cried is when Oskar is crying as I think he thinks we are doing something to him!

He had his last Health Visitor appointment on Saturday 14th January, they said he is doing well! His cord hasn’t fallen off yet but looks pretty good. He had his heel prick test which he literally slept through.. I was expecting him to cry and then for me to cry. But he was not bothered by it at all. He lost about 4.5% of his birth weight and weighed in at around 7lbs 5oz.

Here is my little man, one week old ๐Ÿ™‚ย img_2053-2
